Lighting the Advent Wreath

Hymn: “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” stanza 7, The United Methodist Hymnal, 211

All: O come, Desire of nations bind all peoples in one heart and mind.  From dust thou brought us forth to life; deliver us from earthly strife.

Our souls magnify the Lord and our spirits rejoice in God for God has looked with favor on us, God’s servants.

God has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly. God has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.

God of Justice, God of Peace, we open our hearts to you. Give us grace to be instruments of your righteousness.

Give us courage to turn away from distractions and distortions and turn toward the home you have made, are making, and will complete through Christ.

All: We, God’s people, sing songs of joy with the prophet, “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God.” (Isaiah 61:10, NRSV)

Light all four Advent candles.

O Jesus, light of the world, in you God broke the hold of darkness on the world of Caesar.  We pray that today, as in those days, you will illumine us with the vision of a new world – a world in which hate yields to love, weapons are turned into tools, and enemies become allies.  Give us the grace not only to see that vision, but to put flesh on it as did Jesus in Nazareth of Galilee.

Call to Worship                                                                          READER

Here, in this place, we discover the great things God has done.
In story and song, in silence and sacrament,
we are reminded that God’s relationship with us lasts forever.

Here, during this holy season, we hear those promises made so long ago.
Of the One who repairs all our mistakes,of the One who reshapes our brokenness.

14Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem!15The LORD has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more.16On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak.17The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing18as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it.19I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lameand gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praiseand renown in all the earth.20At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; or I will make you renowned and praisedamong all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunesbefore your eyes, says the LORD.

SILENT PRAYER

Luke 3:10-18                                                                                           Rev. Boyle

10And the crowds asked [John the Baptist], “What then should we do?” 11In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.” 12Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do?” 13He said to them, “Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.” 14Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what should we do?” He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”

15As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

18So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people.

Second Sunday of Advent

Second Sunday of Advent (December 9, 2018)

In those days a fiery preacher from the desert came to tell the people:

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near!”

He is the one the prophet Isaiah spoke about when he said:

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

‘Prepare the way of the Lord,

      make his paths straight.”

We light the second Advent candle in preparation for the coming of the Messiah,

in anticipation of the fullness of God’s justice and righteousness,

and remembering the call of John the Baptist

    to make paths straight,

    repent of our sin,

and live holy lives devoted to God.

Light the candle

Come, Lord Jesus.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Amen.

Keep awake! Be watchful!

The Son of Man is coming with great power and glory.

He shall judge the nations;

neither shall they learn war anymore.

We light the first Advent candle reminding us that God’s promised Messiah
