Larry Matthews Memorial

Larry Matthews, born December 21, 1957. He was raised in Union Beach. At the time of his passing he resided in Monmouth Beach. He loved fishing, crabbing, being at the beach, going to the racetrack, and watching gold and football, especially the Green Bay Packers. Larry worked for Dupont for about 15 years before going on disability due to a back injury. He had two children, Lauren Nicole, 26, and Jonathan Eric, 19.

He was married to Tina (Visconi) Tina Matthews. Tina and Larry moved to 6th street, in Union Beach, before buying a home on Harris Ave., Union Beach Larry enjoyed repairing the home. He would mow the grass more than needed, and he created a little cubicle in the back of the tractor where he would put his two kids and pull them around like an amusement ride while making sure the lawn was mowed perfectly.

Christmas time on Harris Ave was the family’s favorite. Larry and his children always needed to have the biggest tree although Tina did not attest to it. Their tradition was that Larry would put on the Christmas lights and then Tina, Lauren and Jonathan would decorate the tree with thousands of ornaments. When it came time to decorating the outside of the house, it was always white lights. One year, Larry created a huge star out of wood that he topped with white lights and placed on top of the roof. As you rode over the bridge on the neighboring streets, you could see their house from afar. Larry even won a light decorating contest one year. He put much pride into his home and that pride was seen by everyone.

Larry was a son, a brother, a husband and a father. He was an amazing guy and will be remembered for strength and willingness to push through even in bad times.

GATHERING / GREETING

HYMN                                                                         UMH 314

     In The Garden”

PRAYER

Dying, Christ destroyed our death. Rising, Christ restored our life. Christ will come again in glory.

Friends, we gathered here to praise God and to witness to our faith as we celebrate the life of Larry. We come together in grief, acknowledging our human loss. May God grant us grace, that in pain we may find comfort, in sorrow hope, in death resurrection.

As in baptism Larry put on Christ, so in Christ may Larry be clothed with glory. Here and now dear friends, we are God’s children. What we shall be has not yet been revealed; but we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Those who have this hope purify themselves as Christ is pure.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

ALL:    O God, who gave us birth, you are ever more ready to hear than we are to pray. You know our needs before we ask, and our ignorance in asking. Give to us now your grace, that as we shrink before the mystery of death, we may see the light of eternity. Speak to us once more your solemn message of life and of death. Help us to live as those who are prepared to die. And when our days here are accomplished, enable us to die as those who go forth to live, so that living or dying, our life may be in you, and that nothing in life or in death will be able to separate us from your great love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

PSALM                          23

ALL: The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing.

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

God’s Gifts Are for Use in His Service
The gifts we have received are not ours alone. God gave them to us for the purpose of serving Him and serving other people.

Each of us has something to give.

The apostle Paul phrased it this way:

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. (NIV, Romans 12:5-8)
