Advent Christmas Eve, 2019

Christmas Eve

Good news! Good news!

Our hopes and fears and all of years

have met in this place tonight.

And we have beheld the glory of the coming of God’s Messiah.

Sing for joy! Salvation has come!

Light the Christ Candle

We light the Christ candle as a sign to the world

that today, in the City of David, a Savior is born,

    who is Christ the Lord.

We no longer have to fear the darkness

     for our Light has come.

Glory to God in the highest heaven!

And on earth, peace to all of God’s children!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Amen.

Lighting the Advent Wreath

All: O come, Desire of nations bind all peoples in one heart and mind.  From dust thou brought us forth to life; deliver us from earthly strife.

Our souls magnify the Lord and our spirits rejoice in God for God has looked with favor on us, God’s servants.

God has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly. God has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.

God of Justice, God of Peace, we open our hearts to you. Give us grace to be instruments of your righteousness.

Give us courage to turn away from distractions and distortions and turn toward the home you have made, are making, and will complete through Christ.

All: We, God’s people, sing songs of joy with the prophet, “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God.” (Isaiah 61:10, NRSV)

Light all four Advent candles.

Another mission project that will be on-going throughout the year is “Shoe Boxes for Kids”.

These boxes will contain items small enough to fit into a shoe box that would be used by children, such as pens, pencils, crayons, note paper, stickers, toothbrush, toothpaste.

The receptacle to hold these items will be located in the nave.

The filled boxes will be sent to children in the U.S. and around the world.

Healthy Personal Hygiene Background

Future ‘Shoe Boxes’ will be for Women, and for Men.  If you have new personal hygiene items for Women or Men you can put them in the receptacle at any time.  We will separate as needed.

Second Sunday of Advent

In those days a fiery preacher from the desert came to tell the people:

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near!”

He is the one the prophet Isaiah spoke about when he said:

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

‘Prepare the way of the Lord,

      make his paths straight.”

We light the second Advent candle in preparation for the coming of the Messiah,

in anticipation of the fullness of God’s justice and righteousness,

and remembering the call of John the Baptist

    to make paths straight,

    repent of our sin,

and live holy lives devoted to God.

Light the candle

Come, Lord Jesus.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Amen.
